March Madness : First Four

The small and the stalled make it to the First Four.  Games in which two types of themes play out.  #16 seeds battle it out for the right to walk in front of the firing squad of a #1 seed.  Second is that extra game that those bubble teams must play to get in.

  1. Vandy against Wichita State (#11) with the winner to face #6 south seed Arizona.
  2. Holy Cross and Southern (#16’s) get the right to get blown out in the West against #1 seed Oregon.
  3. Florida Gulf Coast vs Fairleigh Dickinson (#16’s) to face the #1 Tarheels in the east.
  4. Michigan and Tulsa tangle at #11 play in.  The Fighting Irish will wait for them also in the east.

Kings of the World : Your #1 Seeds

  1. East : North Carolina
  2. South : Kansas
  3. Midwest : Virginia
  4. West : Oregon

Surprised that Michigan State was shut out of the #1 seeds.  Oklahoma could not make it two Big 12 teams as #1 seeds.  Virginia did not win their conference tournament yet got one.  A lot of people were surprised at the overall impression that the Pac-12 had in the eyes of the committee.  The start of the selection show already had a few eyebrow raisers with the elite seeds.

March Madness South Bracket Break Down

March Madness South Bracket Break Down

The overall #1 seed in March Madness are the Kansas Jayhawks from the south.  Committee members did them no favors.  Even thought the #2 and #3 seeds are iffy, the #4 and #5 challengers are ripe with potential.  So what makes #4 Cal and #5 Maryland superior to the higher seeds in the bottom part of the bracket?  Join us at HRWager as we quickly whip through the south bracket and give our initial impressions.

South is Stacked

March madness south

Maryland and California in the same side as #1 seed Kansas is packed.  Colorado as a #8 seed with their rebounding ability is a potent test.  The other side of the bracket is less impressive with #2 Villanova and #3 Miami.  Even though the Hurricanes will blow out Buffalo in the first round, the bottom is not impressive.  Sleeper is Cal with them having a probable three young NBA lottery picks on their team.

Upsets

First of all, take a talented Temple team against Iowa in the first round.  The Hawkeyes collapsed in the Big Ten season and are vastly over rated even at a #7 seed.  Miami (#3) is much more of a complete team than Villanova (#2) and should come out of their half of the bracket.  Finally, UConn is on a roll but needed a miracle to get past Cincinnati.  Buffaloes are like the Bearcats but are better.  Take the Buffs for a 2x wager in the first round.

Good fortune to everyone in the upcoming March Madness.  We get the best play in game we might have ever seen with Vanderbilt against Wichita State.  Lots of talent and upset potential with Kansas getting challenged in the second weekend of action.  We will see you tomorrow here at the HRW.

Michigan State vs Purdue Free Pick 3/13

Michigan State vs Purdue Free Pick 3/13

One more step in the gauntlet for a Big Ten Championship.  The Michigan State vs Purdue Free Pick for March 13th represents both high level basketball and profit.  Spartan fans saw how their team barely survived with a three point win over Maryland.  Purdue blasted the Wolverines not only out of the game but perhaps the NCAA tournament as well.  This 4PM game has MSU as a -4 point favorite.  Which way will the winds of profit blow in from for this one?

Free Pick : How Purdue Might Win?

Purdue Free Pick 3/13

Convert a tangible front court advantage to a victory.  Last two games, this was the theme for easy wins.  Even when AJ Hammons is on the bench, his back up is tearing up the floor.  Hammons had the monster double double with 27 points and eleven boards against Michigan.  Even on a day when their three point shooting did not go right (4-12), the middle men carried the day.  AJ and Isaac Haas went 15 for 24 from the floor.  They were also proficient at the charity stripe going 8-11.  How can the Spartans handle Purdue if they hit their perimeter shots as well?

Big Men Tire

The game on Sunday will feature two tired teams.  Michigan State had to go to the well often for extra defensive energy against Maryand.  Effort was rewarded with no field goals made in the last ten minutes but it was exhaustive.  Two best Spartan players did not hit much from the floor.  Valentine distributed the ball well for 10 assists when his scoring touch alluded him.  Forbes went one for six in an ugly effort.  Maryland is even larger than Purdue and the Spartans had trouble with the size on Saturday.

Scoring usually seems to take less energy than lock down defense.  In a bubble, Michigan State minus four would be good.  This is reality.  Spartans are a tired team facing another physical effort 4PM on Sunday.  Purdue can still play better and it will show.  Take Purude ML for your underdog ML winner of the day.  Good fortune and we will see you on Monday here at the HRW.
