NFL Scandal : Kaepernick and the National Anthem
Even in the preseason, NFL Scandal can happen when you least expect it. Social media and the Internet are still aflame this morning after Colin Kaepernick took a stance by sitting. During the part of the pregame where the nation is honored, Colin would not stand during the National Anthem. Many sought out Colin after the game to find out why. Steve Wyche of NFL Media was successful and brings us these direct quotes from his conversation with the 49’ers signal caller.
I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.

This is not something that I am going to run by anybody. I am not looking for approval. I have to stand up for people that are oppressed. … If they take football away, my endorsements from me, I know that I stood up for what is right.

Of course when something is this combustible, a prudent organization would choose to address this. Niner’s top brass came out with their own statements on this. In essence, they described what the National Anthem means to their organization. They stressed that at the heart of this is freedom. So to condone Kaepernick in exercising his freedom to sit would be foolhardy.
